  • 2.0 out of 5 stars from Mike -- Pretty dry… : I’ve been playing D&D since 1981 so I’m always interested in the subject matter. However, the author for this book didn’t deliver any kind of entertaining narrative and it hinges closer (for me) to a text book. There was a lot of “Arneson drive to here to talk with his attorney and blah blah blah then Gygax wrote a letter with blah blah blah” and a bunch quotes on stocks, profits, and sales numbers. That’s fine, but I would have liked actually interviews with people close to both men. Maybe the author tried and failed or maybe all are dead, but it left me skipping over paragraphs in search of something that would hold my interest. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Jason Duncan -- Fascinating Read! : I'm one of the last people that would consider financial history and forensic accounting interesting. Still, the description of this book intrigued me (as I'm a long-time RPG player) so I took a risk and ordered a copy. I was honestly shocked at how interesting this book turned out to be. Part of that I would have to attribute to my love of D&D but mostly it would be the author's incredible ability to give dry accounting matters the tone of a suspense story. I'm not kidding, this book reads like a murder mystery complete with ominous hints that a fact here or there will be important later. If all business history were this fascinating, I would have been an accountant. The next time I get paid, I am going to order more of Peterson's books. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Colin A. Brodd -- A History of Gygax, Arneson, TSR, and the battle for D&D : Meticulously researched (as was the author's previous book about the history of the gaming industry, "Playing At The World"), this book chronicles the early history of TSR, from the initial publishing of D&D in 1974 up to the ouster of Gary Gygax from the company in 1985. I fear the book will be of little interest to most people who are not Gamers or interested in the history of Our Hobby, but I was utterly fascinated from start to finish. Highly recommended for anyone with a similar interest . . . ( Reviewed in the United States on November 6, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from James F. Panarella -- The definitive story of the war for Dungeons and Dragons. : I got this book at around noon today and through non-stop reading, I finished it at about 2:30 in the morning. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 13, 2021 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Brian Collins -- How D&D happened, in one volume : Good solid history of TSR and the D&D creators' personalities. For me I would have liked more corny anecdotes but this approach is Ok ( Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Eric D. Smith -- Definitive. : A detailed look at the history of TSR and those personas involved with TSR. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2021 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Ron Titus -- How to Create an Industry and Loose your Business! : Dungeons & Dragons! If you grew up in the 1970s and 1980s, you just knew about D&D, especially if you were a nerd, a geek, or just into playing games. Between college students disappearing into steam tunnels, D&D being banned from school campuses, and claims of devil worship, pop culture was rife with stories about the game. But what is the real story of how D&D came to be, who created it, and what happened next? Jon Peterson provides a documented version of the behind the scenes story in the pages of Game Wizards! • 5.0 out of 5 stars from MTB -- A very engaging history of this influential company : This is a very readable, very engaging history of the company that created the Dungeons & Dragons game. It focuses on the acrimonious split between the two creators as well as tracking the rise of the game and TSR. It is highly detailed with lots of quotes from letters, fanzines, etc., and really brings the primary players to life. You will enjoy this book! ( Reviewed in the United States on October 12, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from giovanni -- Mandatory reading for any self respectable D&D player : I'm a avid D&D player, and this book taught me so much about it. It's the story of a small company created as a hobby, which quickly grew too much, and collapsed on itself. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 5, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Gianluca -- Un pezzo di storia dei giochi di ruolo, un saggio meraviglioso : Meraviglioso approfondimento fatto da un autore di peso (suo è infatti il ponderoso Playing at the World, oltre che lo stupendo Art & Arcana) sulla storia dei contenziosi (anche legali) tra i due co-creatori di D&D (Gary Gygax e Dave Arneson) per la paternità del gioco più bello del mondo. ( Reviewed in Italy on November 16, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from John L Keating -- A very good chronology of the early days of D&D : Game Wizards gives a very detailed look at the origins of Dungeons and Dragons, with extensive, well-cited supporting documents. As with many history books that rely on personal letters and accounts, you have to be wary of bias, but the author does a good job of cutting through the subjectivity to piece together what probably happened. I think the best indicator that Game Wizards gives an objective account is that none of the major players come out looking particularly great in the end. ( Reviewed in Canada on November 18, 2021 )
